YOUR PREFLIGHT CHECKLIST
A few essentials to have ready before you arrive.
STEP 01
For your medical exam, complete the FAA application before your visit.
STEP 02
Bring your MedXPress confirmation number so your AME can locate the application.
STEP 03
Bring government-issued photo ID and glasses or contacts if you use them.
STEP 04
Bring requested medical reports, medication details, and relevant FAA correspondence.

Airline / ATP
Airline transport pilot operations requiring a First Class medical.
Typical validity for this class*
Under 35: not routinely required. Ages 35–39: one baseline ECG at the first exam after reaching age 35. Age 40 and over: annually.
First-time FAA medical applicants need an FAA-approved, in-person computerized color vision test. See the returning-pilot exceptions below.
Commercial flying
Commercial pilot operations requiring a Second Class medical.

The computerized screening policy took effect January 1, 2025 and applies to all three medical classes. Returning pilots who previously passed an FAA-approved color vision test generally do not need routine retesting—including solely to upgrade a class. A first visit to this office is not the same as a first-ever FAA medical.
